Before finding Vegega, I’ll be honest I had never considered raised beds for myself. I didn’t need them for my allotment and my back garden has beds built into the landscaping, but when I found Vegega and talked to them about how I could work a raised bed into my garden I realised it would be the perfect way to finally make over our small and tired looking front garden.

It’s was a small paved area, hated by me, but there was little point in digging the paving up as there was only hard rubble and the foundations of our house underneath. So I decided with the help from Vegega to build up.

Pro’s and Con’s to Vegega raised beds.

Like with anything there are pro’s and con’s to installing metal raised beds but I have found the pros massively outweighed the cons for our front garden.

I have explored the spaces a raised bed would be great for and whether they are worth it in this article “Are raised bed worth it?”

Pro’s

  • Easy to install. The process of building and filling the raised bed took me 2-3 hours. This would be much easier with a second person.

  • Improves the drainage and soil health of a once unloved area. We couldn’t do much with our front garden which had only small shallow beds for planting around the edges. These did not receive much sunlight from the boundary wall. Adding a raised bed meant I can add layers of healthy soil, and raise the height of the beds to receive more sunlight, perfect for planting anything from vegetables to flowers.

  • A long life. These should last a minimum of 20 years without the colour fading or peeling and will not appear to degrade over time. Compared to raised beds you could build yourself from wood these have a much much longer life.

  • Vegega’s materials are all non-toxic, safe to use if you have pets or children.

  • An eco-friendly option. Because they will last many years and can be recycled at the end of their life Vegega’s raised beds are a great sustainable option for your garden.

  • Minimal maintenance. Once built you shouldn’t need to do anything to your raised beds to maintain them. They won’t need repairing or replacing for the next 20 years minimum. Adding wood chips or gravel around the beds would provide a very low maintenance area. No mowing between the beds and no weeding.

  • They look great. If your unsure how you add height, interest and colour to the landscape of your garden, these raised beds are perfect for completely changing the look of an area. You can easily fill them with flowers and perennial plants to make your garden look great year on year, great for the less green-fingered of us as well as the garden gurus.

Con’s

  • They cost. Though not massively expensive if like me you only need one large raised bed for the area (I saw this as a budget way to revitalise our front garden) but if you needed many raised beds to fill an area, like on a veg plot, buying metal raised beds could become expensive.

  • Building and filling takes time. Building and filling one was no problem at all and really didn’t take much effort by myself but I don’t think I would be pleased with the prospect of filling an entire veg plot or large garden. This is why it comes down to the space you have. I wouldn’t recommend them for an allotment, though rows and rows of these beds look beautiful it would be time-consuming and expensive.

How does Vegega compare to other raised beds.

Vegega price-wise is at the top end of metal raised beds (you can buy these really cheap on Amazon and other budget websites) but I would recommend buying these over cheaper ones any day for a number of reasons.

  • Vegega is an ethical company committed to sustainable practices.

  • Never buy off Amazon if you can avoid it (sorry personal opinion on sustainability)

  • These come with bracing rods. This means they have metal rods in the long rectangular beds holding their shape and will not bend or become misshapen over time.

Summary

In conclusion I’m really impressed with everything I’ve experienced from Vegega and would 100% recommend buying from them. From my research I have found them to be an ethical company, the price was right for what we needed, it was easy to put together and I was able to transform our tired-looking front garden easily and cheaply.
