Period Pants for Postpartum. A Wuka Review.

When I had my first baby I wasn’t quiet ready for what postpartum would have in store for me. As someone who had been cutting down on plastic and planned to use cloth nappies, cloth wipes and sustainable clothing on my baby, I definitely wasn’t prepared enough for the amount of disposable products I would go through in the postpartum stage. And more than that, just how uncomfortable those products would make me when used in the long term.

Pre-baby I had tried a few cloth sanitary pads, getting on with them so planned to use those 3-4 to wear post birth. I brought 2 packs of organic disposable heavy duty pads for the first week after birth thinking this would do me. Oh how wrong I was. For the first week I needed to change my pad every couple of hours. Throw some stitches into the mix after a difficult birth and I ended up having sleepless night, not because of the new born baby who slept quiet well next to me but because I was so uncomfortable from weeks of wearing disposable pads.

Can I use Period Pants for Postpartum Bleeding?

Period pants are a great option for postpartum bleeding because they will leave you more comfortable, feeling drier and save a lot waste. In the early days of heavier bleeding period pants can be used with pads to prevent leaks.

Fast forward three years to my second baby. I had now only used reusable period products including WUKA period pants and knew these would be a game charger when it came to the postpartum phrase.

I opted to buy a few of the Hipster Medium Flow, finding these perfect for a number of reasons.

  1. In the first few days of heavy bleeding I wore pads as well as my WUKA pants. This doubling up I would say is necessary. Makes it easy to change your pad and have an extra barrier from leaks. (I will say that WUKA are more than enough for heavy bleeding with your period but the first couple of days post birth are another level and you will want to change often.)

  2. After the initial heavy bleeding the weeks that followed for me was consistently light bleeding. The medium flow was therefore more than enough absorbency for this, keeping me soo much more comfortable than the first time around.

  3. They sit nicely over your hips, perfect to keep you feeling supported and comfy when everything else feels too soft and jelly like.

WUKA period pants are really the most comfortable way to do postpartum bleeding. Though you can feel the pants are a little thicker between in the crotch area it is barely noticeable especially compared to sanitary pads.

The design of WUKA’s period pants is simple but tasteful. Plus let’s face it they look far better than disposable pants many recommend for postpartum, and although it’s not a time to worry about what you look like especially in your underwear, I found having nice underwear helped me feel more myself. Looking at them on you would never know they were period pants.

I also love buying from WUKA because they are an earth conscious company, in fact the first period pant producer to be carbon neutral. You’ll know if you follow me on Instagram that where I put my money is as important to me as the waste I produce. These guys tick all the boxes. They have just released their carbon analysis footprint report, which you can download here.

From postpartum to periods.

The beauty of investing in WUKA pants for portpartum is that they will be useful to you for many years to come when your periods return and if you have more children in the future. It makes the investment money wise completely worth it as they will save you a ton of money in the long run.

I now use my period pants in conjunction with a moon cup for my periods. Together on the first heavy days (I’m always worried my moon cup with leak though it rarely does) and then just my period pants at the end of my period rather than switching to panty liners.

Then when your ready, when birth is a distance memory and your feeling more yourself have a look at the new collection WUKA are releasing. A new lace lingerie line with the idea to reconnect with yourself, embrace your sensuality and redefine sexy on your own terms throughout all stages of your cycle.
